The challenge
As one of the most anticipated character introductions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the arrival of Red Hulk (Thaddeus Ross) in Captain America: Brave New World demanded a truly menacing, colossal physical presence on the outdoor forecourt of Ratu Plaza along Jakarta's prominent Jalan Jenderal Sudirman corridor.
Key engineering and artistic challenges:
- Intimidating Scale & Intense Anatomy: Red Hulk is defined by explosive muscular bulk, hyper-pronounced vascularity, and an enraged facial expression that had to read clearly both to pedestrians up close and to passengers in passing traffic.
- High-Exposure Urban Location: Situated directly adjacent to one of Jakarta's busiest avenues, the installation had to meet rigorous safety codes, resisting sudden gale winds, vehicle vibration, and tropical rainstorms without shifting.
- Compressed Fabrication Timeline: The entire 4.5-meter sculpture had to be sculpted, reinforced, hand-painted, cured, and erected on-site in under 3 weeks to synchronize with nationwide promotional campaigns.
Our approach
- Engineered Steel Skeleton & Interlocking Modules:
Livindo engineers developed an internal galvanized tubular steel armature mounted to an 800 kg concealed steel plate ballast within the pedestal base. The body was divided into 4 engineered modules (head & neck, upper chest torso, right arm with clenched fist, and lower pelvic anchor) utilizing high-tolerance guide pins for rapid on-site joining.
- Master Sculptor Foam Art & Protective Matrix:
Carved from high-density 32 kg/m³ expanded polystyrene blocks by Livindo's master sculptors, every contour of the striated pectorals, biceps, furrowed brow, and bared teeth was rendered with theatrical intensity. The sculpture was sealed with a reinforced polymer matrix and fine fiberglass skin to preserve artistic detailing under a rock-hard weatherproof exterior.
- Multi-Tone Flame Duco Coating & Thermal Highlights:
Finishing employed a four-stage automotive polyurethane system: a deep maroon-black undercoat in muscle valleys, a blazing crimson base, and warm orange-red airbrushed highlights on raised veins to simulate radioactive thermal energy pulsing beneath the skin.
- Environmental Diorama: Cherry Blossoms & Vibranium Shield:
To complement the raging figure with cinematic storytelling contrast, Livindo built lush Japanese cherry blossom trees with thousands of soft pink blooms surrounding the perimeter, anchored by a battle-tested replica of Captain America's iconic star-crested shield.
Outcome
The colossal Red Hulk sculpture at Ratu Plaza became an instantaneous social media magnet. Commuters along Jalan Sudirman regularly paused to capture photos, creating an organic wave of viral buzz across Instagram and TikTok. The project proved Livindo's capability in delivering world-class character sculpts with impeccable safety and Hollywood-standard craftsmanship.
